Blyth and Tyne into Newcastle City centre

Hi, I vaguely remember reading a book by Ken Hoole I think and it states the B&T purchased land around the Pilgrim Street area or thereabouts? if anyone can recollect this or if there is anything known further about the plans to come further into the city center I'd be very interested.
