I live immediately next to the ECML so I see or hear almost everything that passes. Over the years I have seen a few moves like the HST yesterday, it maybe happens a couple of times a year, or occasionally 2 power cars with a barrier coach or two. The most unusual move I saw was a few years ago when a class 91 loco came past on its own, heading south blunt end first.
Of course I am never sitting near a camera when these things happen!

One day, probably about 20 years ago, I was taking photos just north of Tamworth when a 'train' of about 5 or 6 Class 91 went past, heading in the direction of Crewe.
And I did have my camera handy!!

Not HST's but interesting from 2009-07-11.
I live near the ECML and these things happen more often than you would think, but I always seem to have left the camera behind.

This photo on Flickr shows an HST power car travelling on its own on the main line.
I have never seen anything like this except when they are moving around a depot such as Bath Road.

I'm pretty sure I saw 2 HST power cars back to back at Scremerston in 1980 but wasn't fast enough to get a shot of it

Here's the German ICE equivalent:
http://www.badische-zeitung.de/suedwest ... 69414.html. The stubby ICE is being used to test the new Katzenberg Tunnel about 10 km north of Basel which is due to open in December. Maximum speed 250 km/h. There's a video further down the page, which, after a stupid advert, has an interview with the guy in charge plus footage (should that be meterage) of a journey through the tunnel itself - the lights are on, so you actually get to see something.
Is anything being tested on the ECML?

However has anyone got a shot of the "Prototype HST though?
2 A4s back to back. Or top and tailing.

Yes I did.
I just removed it before I replied, as I considered that it was not relevant to my reply.

The clue is in the quotation mark, SS!
I think this is what Bryan had in mind:
- "Prototype" HST in Garter Blue
Shots of the "prototype" in its original silver livery are very rare indeed...

There was only one quotation mark, plus a question mark at the end of the first line.
I presumed that was one sentence, and illustrated a photo of the prototype HST.
What is wrong with that?

Nothing at all but I did mean 2 x A4s.
And I forgot to put in the 2nd quotation mark.
