Went to the KWVR to get a few last shots of the Coal tank before its livery changes for next week.

I'm ignorant of that class of loco - why is it called a "Coal Tank"?

What livery is it going into? Would love to see it in LNWR.

Simple explanation, thanks to Wikipedia, is that they're called Coal Tanks because they're the Tank version of the Coal Engine - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNWR_17in_Coal_Engine

It is going to be numbered 1054 by next week, then later in the year it will go into LMS.

Top quality pics, thanks very much. Good story about Coal Tank 7742 in 1945 relates to the day a Euston - Blackpool service failed at Leighton Buzzard, the Jubilee on the express having knocked off its right hand cylinder cover. All Leighton had was this tankie, normally used on the Dunstable branch. Anyway, they attached it to the front and our correspondent was astounded to see it emerge from Linslade Tunnel on the Down Slow, working flat out at at about 10mph, hauling the failed engine and its ten coach train. It returned light engine from Bletchley about an hour later!

They were the tank engine version of the Webb "Coal Engine," themselves a predecessor of the "Cauliflower" or "18 inch goods" of which a number lasted in BR days.

Love these stories of old engines that got dragged off of the everyday work to work an Express, I like the one of the old J1 that took 14 coaches from Hitchin to Kings Cross after a Pacific failed.
