Coal Yard ??? Denby Dale Road, Wakefield

Hello.

As a new member to the forum I wonder if I can crack off with asking if anyone knows if there still exists what I think was or is a coal depot complete with rail sidings just South of Wakefield on the Denby Dale Road area.
I have a picture of me stood on a steam shunting engine in about 1967 and was wanting to know a bit about the place as I lived in Wakefield then and was on a school outing on this particular day aged about 11.
I now live in Bridlington and can't remember why we had an outing to this yard and wanted to put some info to the photograph.

Cheers, Steve W

P.S A further bit of info is that it was in the Calder Grove, Crigglestone viaduct area. :D

Hi BB

Yes you've hit cos just had a look on Google Earth and thats where it is, or was, as it looks like there is no yard there now.
Will dig out the photo when I'm back of holls and scan it and post it.

Cheers, Steve

Just seen BBs post, and it repeats what i would have said. I had a look down there a couple of years ago but was put off by the travellers who had set up camp.

There were a set of sidings still in existence in June 1990 but disused.
They were used as a training facility by the local Civil Engineers office in Leeds.
I had a full day there looking at various types of rail, baseplates, sleepers etc as part of the regular induction programme for new staff.
The Cafe at nearby New Miller Dam was frequented a number of times.

Would they have become isolated with the closure of the Crigglestone branch?

Ay up!

The sidings were connected to the Barnsley line. It was on the level crossing under the rail bridge (the bridge still stands) that I saw my only glimpse of working steam - 47445 in a horrid yellow / red livery storming across the road.

In later years, "Teddy Bear" class 14s were used.
