We used to get into Langley fairly often when "Dubber" was on duty - really good bloke. Decent cuppa in there, too. Managed a couple of visits to Stevenage South, also, when our old mate was on.

I wish I knew what his real name was, I'm sure some of you fellas would have known him.

Alnmouth
Littlemill
Stamford(downgraded to a gate box, once controlled up entry and down exit to Littlemill loops)
Christon Bank
Falloden(downgraded to gate box, then fitted with automatic half barriers, now under control from Alnmouth on cctv)
Chathill (Nice cabin still plenty to see circa 1967, NER goods shed, 3 lines over level crossing and the truncated remains of the North Sunderland line in use as a spur. Most of the up yard was still intact and there was rail in the North Sunderland bay)
Beal
Scremerston
Tweedmouth Power Box (replaced about 5 other local boxes)

Plus Alnwick and Alnwick East rendered redundant by resignalling the line and controlled from Alnmouth which is still surviving as the last pregrouping cabin on the ECML.

Giving my interest in things Goswick i never managed to cab that box but have got some good interior shots of it. Of a morbid observation the signalman pointed out to me in an email the stretcher which i believe was a standard fitting in cabins was the original LNER one that still had blood stains on it from rescue work following the 1947 derailment of MERRY HAMPTON. This was in place till the cabin was closed.

Bourne East and possibly Austerby Crossing and Four Cross Roads - although all after closure.

Heckington
Sleaford East
Essendine

and that is it.

Micky,

I suspect the large gap between the box door at Langley and the lever frame was when the Hertford Loop was just single track to Cuffley (1918 - 24). The Tylers absolute permissve key token instrument would have needed a bit of space. I understand there was mechanical wire operated device to enable the signalman to deliver a token to a train going USL/Branchan by means of an aerial cable run spanning all four tracks.

Sorry about the length of the post but I think I have remembered them all. These are the boxes I have been in as part of my duties, sometimes as PICOP or Eng Supervior or Handsignalling or just calling in as I was passing on the track whilst working for the PW either BR or derivatives and lastly the NYMR
Some boxes had shut prior to my visit but all were still open in some form or another or I had official access ie. the keys in my pocket.

Looking down Bryan's list I'm missing Horbury & Ossett, which I was allowed to visit when I was about eight or nine. I was taken by neighbour across the road who was a signalman and who knew I was mad about trains. The only thing I can remember is being asked to pull off a lever which "let the steam out of Horbury cutting". Needless to say I couldn't move it!

Bryan where is Crag Hall? I was wondering if you had got mixed up with Crag Mill.
