NRM 2013 100mph run

Post by 60800 »

On steam railway mag's website there is a headline: NRM plans 100mph run for 2013, but that is all the info given.
Does anyone have any info on these plans like loco, location, etc?

Many thanks in advance, JJD

I believe that's why it's called a teaser...

Sounds interesting, hope it does go ahead and isn't stopped by the nanny state. Tornado is an obvious candidate, as I believe the Trust is confident a 90 mph speed is achievable and able to be maintained for some time. It would be a 'must-do' railtour for a lot of people.

I'm willing to bet it will be a certain Deltic that's been restored for mainline operation. There's no way it will be 100mph for a steam locomotive. (Happy to be proven wrong, but still think it's highly unlikely).

2013 as in the year.

Anyway, I agree that if the run does go ahead, it will probably be with KOYLI. There was quite a few workmen scrambling around her with plenty of hatches open on 25/02/12

Add 75 years to 1938 - the year of Mallard's world record - and the answer is...?

That was my first thought, then I saw the story was in Steam Railway - or am I being too literal (again  )?

NRM plans 100mph run for 2013
Perhaps not in the UK?
If a Thompson rebuild is the answer... the question must have been daft to begin with!

Sorry Micky, but I don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about :? A deltic would be the most obvious and most feasible choice for a 100mph run. Even though it was on steam railways website, they are providing a piece of information which is in the planning stage, and the NRM could still be picking a loco to use, wether it will be steam or diesel, we do not know.

Trouble here is that there is a fundamental difference between 'can do' and 'permitted to do'. 'Tornado' is probably capable of matching, if not exceeding, 'Mallard's' world record but I don't think anyone, at least in the UK, would want to compromise that piece of history. Peppercorn intentionally incorporated all the contemporary elements that would provide for sustained and practical high-speed running, inter alia roller-bearing axleboxes, improved bearings on the motion and alignment/adjustment thereof, steaming capacity and efficient steam passages and so on. The workings have demonstrated that she still has plenty in hand when working fully-loaded specials at the maximum permitted speeds, and the ECML remains a 'race-track' in terms of excellent permanent way alignment and has had many of the kinks and point and crossing work that required checks in LNER and early BR days removed.
