Yep, a GWR topic on the LNER forums, but it is about a rather pressing issue.

I remember watching a video about two Dukedogs entering preservation on the Bluebell railway, but according to Wikipedia and various other sources, only one Dukedog survives. What happened to the other?

What's a Dukedog? Is it a dangerous breed?? A question better asked on a (cough, hides mouth behind hand and looks shifty) GWR forum???

I think the video was a BTF or Pathe film. It was in black and white and documented the arrival into preservation of two dukedogs to Horsted Keynes on the Bluebell railway. I'm still searching for the video on the internet

Only one Dukedog was sold into preservation - 9017, sold to a Mr Gomm and housed on the Bluebell Railway. I have "done" the GWR loco & boiler records at Kew and the rest were definitely c/u on withdrawal.

Several of the boilers, which were quite young in age, were retained for possible stationary use before being converted or disposed of.

I would agree with Andy, only 9017 was preserved. Are you sure the loco was a Dukedog? Dredging the recesses of my mind I seem to remember the Bluebell did take two examples of a few classes, including Terriers - I know they are rather different locos but...

Sorry I don't know of any video, but whilst being a Bluebell member, but also an avid Eastern enthusiast (I know it doesn't mix), but I have got to say that it has always been interesting seeing the Dukedog in Steam. Dogduke, doesn't have the same ring for a loco with a name. It's a lovely loco and has history where bits from this and that were made into something else. A bit like the Thompson O1 from a B1 and O4, or a Bachmann A2 or Hornby A3 into an A2 variant or 60113. I seem to remember that there were 2 Dukedogs left when withdrawn and that 9017 was not the proeferred option, glad it was preserved anyway. I see over on the other side that they are going to making a 47xx from bits of a Prairie, a mogul and even a 28xx. I wonder what it's nickname might be.

Oh, I like the GWR but if I joined a GWR forum I wouldn't want to be slated as a blasphemer for mentioning anything LNER

I have to say that there are three GWR locos I actually like. The 57xx (grew up with 5775 and have the Bachy 5775 and L89), the 28xx (Hornby TD model - it does me!) and the 47xx "Night Owl" (would need to be kitbuilt right now....)

I also have the Ks 14xx, numbered as 1401, currently a non-runner due to the expiry of its Ks motor - a not uncommon event!

Had Collett carried on Churchward's development work, I'd have more time for them. In 1914, oils were not up to highly superheated steam, as the LNWR found out to its cost with the Claughtons. By 1925, the oils were available to allow this and the LMS and LNER were getting interesting results. The GWR stuck with Swindon dogma and the Castles and Kings failed to reach their potential as a result.

Stanier found on the LMS that his low-superheat engines were not working. It took Robin Riddles, the BR Standard man, to see the faults and correct 'em.

Well BB, I like the Kings, Olton Hall (but not with those Hogwarts nameplates ), Lode Star and City of Truro.

I am still perplexed as to why the second fully operational de-comissioned Dukedog delivered to the Bluebell Railway was scrapped, leaving only 9017. It would help if I just knew the number of the other Dukedog.
Is there anyone that could provide more information?
