Finally got the chance to see the above film - nothing LNER related but some very enjoyable railway scenes obviously filmed at Didcot, Severn Valley and possibly Bluebell as well as a German railway. Not often you see a Maxim gun being fired down a clerestory carriage!

Ah the Maxim gun, resposible for naming a drink i was rather fond of, Double Maxim. Captain Vaux commanded a company of machine gunners in the Boer war and when his fathers brewery Vaux of Sunderland brought out a new Brown Ale they named it Double Maxim cos it was alleged it had twice the kick of a Maxim gun.

I don't remember the name but wasn't there a film from the 50s/60s based on a small group taking a young Indian prince to 'safety' on an Indian railway that had a Maxim being used inside a carriage?

Yes "Northwest Frontier" - mainly filmed in Spain iirc. Some web searching will pick up the loco / filming details - I looked it up last time I watched it. Here in the US it is available online from places like Netflix and Hulu. Lauren Bacall (slightly out of place), Kenneth More playing Kenneth Moore, Herbert Lom as the villain, and Wilfred Hyde White playing Wilfred Hyde White. With an English-built "Old Victoria" as their trusty steed.

We watched the first episode of the new "Downton Abbey" last night. From what the characters were saying it sounds like it is based in the Ripon / Malton sort of area, but not a bit was filmed in Yorkshire and rail scenes on the Bluebell - but at least the SE&CR engine had the right livery for the era (probably one of my favourite pre-grouping liveries).

Regarding Downton, there's also a scene where a character gets a charabanc. Unfortunately not the wonderful ex-LNWR Mike Sutcliffe Leyland but a civilianised Thornycroft J type WW1 lorry with a charabanc body, however it's painted as NERC, Obviously North Eastern Railway Company (although presume NER would be more appropriate), so presume they did some homework at least. I narrowly missed out on being an extra in the second series, many of my friends were in it though

Found a link to the CGI locomotive and carriage used in 'Game of Shadows' - looks like it was copied off the 1901 South Eastern & Chatham Railway D class;
