Ye Gods!
I've never heard about the top of the piers lifting before.
However, it was found that faulty workmanship was partly to blame plus remember that no one at this time understood what happens when cast iron is exposed to salt water.
There were several near disaters when it was found that salt water quickly reduces cast iron to an almost soil like consistency.
