Does anyone have any idea what was going on on the Hertford East branch yesterday? When the 13:01 arrival from Liverpool Street pulled into platform 2 at Hertford East there was a train of Network Rail stock topped and tailed by a pair of class 37s standing in platform 1.
Almost immediately the passenger train had arrived the Network Rail train departed, but what was it doing?

Sounds like the 'Ultrasonics train' which came from EAST HAM depot yesterday
It picks up all the 'track faults' and makes hard work for everyone
That train originally comes up from DERBY to LONDON then returns to DERBY at the end of the week
Usually a couple of 37s top & tail the train but sometimes a couple of 31s do the job

It seems to be a well travelled train as I saw it leaving Exeter St Davids not so long ago and climbing the hill up to the Central station. The odd thing was that the rear Class 37 roared into life so both engines were working hard. Sounded great!
