That is an amazing bit of film, the sight of the trains jumping the gap was not something I expected to see. I do wonder how a European train would have coped, the Americans used very flexible bar frames on their locos, and their rolling stock tends to have very resilient suspension in order to cope with their often poor track.
I would like to see a similar experiment carried out here, but I suspect I will have a long wait.

I agree, on a curve just a short length taken out on the outside curve would do the job.

Dunno, but I bet you'll find the answer on the web.

On the subject of derailments, I've just bought the 1928 film "The Wrecker" which features the demise of a SER A class and some elderly carriages.

As was much of "Oh! Mr. Porter", wasn't 'The Wrecker' also staged on the Basingstoke & Alton Light Railway?
