I have seen the news on the local modern websites pity 62005/65842 wasnt available a better choice for working freight around the area.

Its ironic isn't it - there are yards full of mothballed class 60's and even a few 66's and yet a rail freight company feels the need to hire in a 50 year old locomotive to do the work! Such is progress...

Sirs, get your violin out---when I was gainfully employed the instructions for Deltics working other than diagrammed trains could only be arranged with permissin of control---but freight trains in my time were definitely not suitable for "racehorses".
On reflection it seems a wise choice as apart from the Clayton type 1s the Deltics could work a slower train with just one engine running otherwise a 350DES could be used with choice of working in series or parrallel....Jim Brodie.

Yes, well such is the system. I was suprised that GBRF didn't take an option on other type 5's of a more modern nature. The Class 60's are all owned by DB of course so I would imagine the cost of hire would be much greater than the Deltic.
I think it is quite funny and will be a welcome sight and source of variety, I guess all the off lease freightliner 66s were just not good enough.

Hi everyone
I used to drive Deltics and they are a marvellous machine,but i think quite wrong for freight work. They can overload at the drop of a hat,and can be a handful till you get rolling, we used to work them from the TCQ on boat train jobs,and often had to resort to shutting one engine down to get up the bank to Percy Main.We used to reckon on one engine they were the equivelent of a 37.

Gateshead had a job from Holgate during the night that was diagrammed a Deltic but it didn't last long.

As a cynic, I think that most examples of locomotives being painted in fictitious liveries are attempts at generating extra revenue. The owners assume that everyone is tired of loco in its real livery so if they paint it how it might have been had it survived a few years longer, or been built a few years earlier, then those who pay to see it, or ride behind it, will do so all over again.
Let us hope we never get a Deltic in Intercity swallow, or large logo blue livery, and if it is going to be used on a freight train, heaven forbid Railfreight grey.
It is almost as if the purists have been elbowed out by the maximise profits people.

My recollection is that the "pink" deltic was actually painted in the Porterbrook livery, which was not unreasonable as they were the owners at the time.
Perhaps someone else can confirm that.

So is the deltic no leaving preservation? So when this contract ends will we have to start a fund to save the last Deltic?

I suspect it's been "Spot-Hired", CVR 1865.
Incidentally, this is not new. Many years ago, my father took me to Green's Economiser's in Wakefield, his place of gainful employ, and there, shunting the Cobra containerised coal depot, was a Deltic. Wierd.
