Land Rover with whistle fitment

If you are on the road near Reading and a Land Rover lets out a locomotive sounding whistle dont be alarmed because one man from near to that town collects whistles and has one fitted. Its a story in the current Land Rover Owner International Magazine.

According to The Construction and Use of Vehicles legislation, the use of "bells, whistles and gongs" is prohibited on GB roads. Still I'll bet it turns a few heads!

They are probably grandfathered in - a large number of things were - eg. my Land Rover was allowed to carry black & silver number plates due to age, but a modern car would not.

That's a shame. Someone with a bit of ingenuity and know-how could install a horn that plays a sound sample of a real A4 formatted into an mp3 chip. That'd raise a few hairs on the back of some necks.

that could be done at a subdued level through a PA side of a cb rig. On a not too dissimilar note I bumped into a scotrail fitter round the botanics in Edinburgh who had fitted a set of class37 horns and control gear to his series 2 softtop! they ran from pencil airtanks under the sills iirc and were not likely to be missed even over the noise of a dodgy old 2.25!

Not quiet an A4 but a chime whistle nevertheless. This "optional extra " was fitted to a mates old Ford, (model A, I think) exhaust pipe, and is activated by a lever in the cab. He drives it around the back roads near his farm in rural Quebec. It has a great sound!.

Thats an exhaust whistle, first picture I have seen of one for years; they were quite common in the 1920's and were often fitted to motorcycles. I once bought a box of old motor bike bits, and found the remains of one - very rusty and bits missing and unfortunately threw it out.
I'm sure Richard is right that such fitments would enjoy "Grandfather Rights" on old vehicles here, despite the regulations.

Ah Jampots!!!!
I will never forget the sound of 90 or so AJS-Matchless bikes of various vintage, all revving up together in a field in Saffron Waldon before heading off for a leisurely ride that ended at a pub in Finchingfield (I think) one bank holiday weekend in 1988. Sheer magic.

I remember a local builder fitted a pair of ex-EE Type 4 Desilux warning horns to his Bedford TK tipper.

The air system on the truck ran at twice that of the diesel so they were VERY loud!
