Bit of a clanger was dropped at Newport. Or rather a brand new class 70 diesel.
Reportedly dropped 20 feet back into the ships hold when the lifting tackle snapped.
Probable write off of the loco and probable damage to the ship as well.

The “Beluga Endurance” carrying 70008 – 70012 was due to dock in Newport late on Jan 4th, subsequently arrived and unloading commenced on the afternoon of Jan 5th. 70008 was 1st off around 14.40 followed by 70011 around 15.50. As a quick turnaround was required it was decided that the remaining 3 locos would be unloaded during the night of Jan 5th / 6th and it was after 70009 & 70010 had been unloaded that the mishap with 70012 occurred. It was reported that a lifting chain had broken and the loco fell 15 -20 feet back into the hold and is said to have gone through the bottom of the vessel. This is not confirmed.

I feel sorry for the ship that now has an ugly betty shaped dent in the hold/hull!

I wonder if it will be written off, and which insurer is about to cough for repair/replacement?

Strange for a loco to be scrapped before it's been used!!!And as no-one was hurt,we can all have a giggle!!!

I think the course track is the proposed position rather than actual, as the position is still Newport and speed Zero.

If there has been hull damage I wouldn't have thought there would be any movement for a while until investigations are complete.
I believe HSE have sealed the site.

Rather than Ugly Betty someone else reckons PLUG might be more apt.

Still no photos, so don't know if dropping it improved its looks or not?

Added 20:00 10/01/2011: The site to which the first of the above links led appears to have gone down - which is a pity, as it had some very long-range photos taken from high ground overlooking the docks but possibly a mile or two distant. 70012 was seen on a road trailer on the dockside with a decided 'uplift' at one end. The other locos were further along the quayside, at ground level. I wonder if they upset someone?
