At least I can put this one in the Railway Chat section.
Went back to the railways for my latest piece. I had considered doing another in the 'Eye' series (engine refelcted in the eye), but put that off till later. Thought about the High Level Bridge, but put that off till later, too. I wanted to do an atmospheric picture.....something that portrayed the real reason why we go to preserved railways. I believe that we don't just go to see steam in action, or smell the smell we know so well. We also go (well at least I do) to bounce up and down in those really comfortable seats (which you can't do now....too hard and uncomfortable in modern carriages), and hang out windows (which you also can't do now, either), and most of all.........to jump back in time to when we were small.....when a train journey was an exciting thing. We want to recapture those days. We never want to let them go.....ever. I don't care if anyone accuses me of too much nostalgia. It warms my heart to think I can once more be 8 or 9 years old, sleeping in the corner of a compartment on the way back home, clutching my bucket and spade, with comics spread all around me.

ANOTHER GREAT PICTURE MALCOLM YOU CAN NEARLY SMELL THE SUN TAN LOTION MINGLING WITH THE SMOKE FROM THE STEAM ENGINE
Re: Latest artwork
I have this recurring problem: I have these great ideas for another artwork......and then I get distracted by something else that would make an even better one. For example...working a picture of the High Level Bridge....and I come across a photo by Ransome-Wallace that inspires me to do an 'atmospheric' piece of work (I actually like those the best).
Anyway, here it is:

Love the shadow effects.
Just wondering what engines start with a 3? Something not from above Watford maybe?

Yes, very atmospheric, Bryan, and up to the usual excellent standard. About the loco -looks SR, right enough, perhaps Malcolm can tell us - a S15, an Arthur, perhaps?Bryan wrote:Love the shadow effects.

A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

Schools class (Sorry about it being a Southern engine, but they are still pretty cool (got memories of riding behind one).hq1hitchin wrote:Yes, very atmospheric, Bryan, and up to the usual excellent standard. Re: Latest artwork
Yes, it does have good atmosphere, but I'm not sure it would work as well in colour - partly as there wouldn't be much and partly as (to me anyhow) the appeal of the picture is in the shadows. From the little night-time steam photography I've done, I think often black and white works better than colour.manna wrote:G'Day Gents

I have similar problems with photography and modelling...Malcolm wrote:I have this recurring problem: I have these great ideas for another artwork......and then I get distracted by something else that would make an even better one.
Re: Latest artwork
Two thoughts about the wonderful study of the SR crew. First, the fireman is obviously a novice, he is firing a left hand drive engine from the driver's side, in other words, like myself he couldn't fire cack-handed. Secondly, when he has finished dashing a bit round her he is expected to take up his duties regarding keeping a sharp lookout ahead despite being temporarily blinded by the firebox glare. The driver seemed to be badly placed in this respect also. These two set-backs were experienced every day (or I should say night) in times past.
This drawing certainly qualifies for the oft-used label "Atmospheric"

Re: Latest artwork
Or was it "Artistic licence" as it looks better.
Re: Latest artwork
Yes, it could qualify as being "Artistic Licence" but I can see myself there in my early days on the shovel, only too true to life, he's probably wondering "What should I do next?" Or, if it's 3 am, "What am I doing here - I wish I was in bed!"

Re: Latest artwork
If we're using artistic licence on this wonderful piece of artwork-can we say it's "Repton" working it's way to Whitby???
Bring back Ferrybridge station!

I'm getting quite hooked on trying to produce a great atmospheric picture in pencil, and have been working on this one for at least 12 hours. Which reminds me, I love those pictures of Grantham in photographs section as they cover not only the locomotives, but the passengers, workers and general atmosphere of the railways.
