This is a good example of lateral thinking, in Germany VW have decided to use the urban tramway system to move parts from a storage area to a factory by using cargo units custom built and fitted to redundant traction motors.

A similar system could be constructed in Sheffield without much difficulty as the Tram shed is on the site of the old Woodbourne road carriage sidings and the tramway feeds Meadowhall shopping centre. I cant speak for Croydon, Manchester or Nottingham but im sure there would be similar potential uses.

This unit is very like the Alicanti - Denia line units, same grass ballast as well, very neat and a great idea for moving local freight, an old idea rehashed.
