Thats the stuff legends are made of. What would todays politically correct Health and Safety make of a old fashioned steam shed !

So atmospheric! Smell those acrid fumes from fire cleaning. Loved the way that fireman on disposal "guarded" his long shovel by taking it with him. Fire irons were usually in short supply. The division in the mess room according to rank! The Polmadie Britannia at the end, no doubt on a Manchester-Glasgow lodging turn.
Good old steam. Virtually everything involved hard, hot, dirty, often uncomfortable physical labour. No wonder it had to go, brilliant though it was.
