World Rail Speed Record

All the talk in viewtopic.php?t=310 has set me reflecting on rail speed records generally. The figure of 320mph set by a short-formation French TGV (see http://www.trainweb.org/tgvpages/rec-intro.html) is pretty impressive, n'est-ce pas?

The picture doesn't show the substantial arcing on the pan head - I saw a clip of this record-breaking run on TV, and it looked as though someone was setting off flashbulbs on the contact wire, presumably because of the continuous bouncing effect of the pantograph at that speed. It does, however, show the cloud of dust thrown up behind the train.

It makes me wonder that every time one of Mr Bransons Virgin sets stops at stoke , should I paint a Snail on the side!
