It is what is known as a command economy.
Would you really prefer to live in such a system?

Well Richard.
Great Britain would not have been great if we had to follow the present system, the canals would never have been made, the rail network would not have happened, waterwheels would have never been developed, the great bridges would never have been built, pits would never have been sunk as no one would have wanted a pit heap on their door step, even our motorways needed compulsory purchase to happen.Sometimes a big stick has to be used to assisit progress, the high speed London link is a classic example of projects being bogged down for decades, the London airport runways are another example, same with proposed power stations.
I watched a programme on the building of the Channel - Paris elevated high speed rail link over the Somme Ponds and they interviewed a farmer whose house was under the elevated concrete trackbed and what was his reaction to it, his reply was " Its for France" could you see that reply happening here ?, I doubt it.

I take the point about living in a "command system" its not good. Too much Stasi like for me. Some would say we are heading that way though.

We have lost the belief in ourselves in this country. To produce anything long term transport wise.
What would the likes of Stephenson and Brunel made of todays attitudes towards work. They made it happen.

Look at the engineering feats building the Settle Carlisle. or production at Doncasters railways works/Shildon wagon works.
Skilled men to a man. All gone into history.

Until some has the scope and vision not to be afraid to implement bold plans. We will continue to rot whilst other countries develop.
