heres my only idea 'jobs in nice tiny yards' lol theres got to be a reason shurely humpies was a better nickname in the midlands at least

This answer comes from the Mid Hants Railway Web site: Its a good question.

John Sanders (MHR Reservations Volunteer) made some enquiries about the origin of the term Jinty. This is the reply he got from the NMSI.
In recent times the term has often been applied to the LMS 3F 0-6-0Ts, but it is believed that the term really derives from the Johnson Midland inside-cylinder 0-4-0STs, Class J, built primarily to work in brewery sidings at Burton on Trent.

Jinty is also a Scottish form of the feminine name Jeanne.

so, Jinty in The Railway Series(and I'm sure that there are some fans other than me here) is a female engine?
