John Sanders (MHR Reservations Volunteer) made some enquiries about the origin of the term Jinty. This is the reply he got from the NMSI.
In recent times the term has often been applied to the LMS 3F 0-6-0Ts, but it is believed that the term really derives from the Johnson Midland inside-cylinder 0-4-0STs, Class J, built primarily to work in brewery sidings at Burton on Trent.

Jinty is also a Scottish form of the feminine name Jeanne.
