Thanks, berwickspotter. Nice footage and stills there. Shame about the rather condensed picture, though.

Just as an afterthought, as it's one of my pet peeves, I wonder if one of the existing A4's might be modified to a single-chimney version. Does wonders for the aesthetics of an already beautiful machine, and would look absolutely stunning in original silver. It would have to be renamed/renumbered as one of the original 'Silver' locos. Maybe that's not on, though.

Wasn't Bittern painted in Grey / Silver Jubilee colours while at the Stephenson museum in the 80s ?

Yes Bittern masqueraded as (I think) Silver Link for quite a while. I think they should have put her into Garter Blue, or even Apple Green after restoration - we already have 2 and a half in BR Green! (Union of South Africa & Dominion of Canada; and Dwight Eisenhower is an approximation to BR Green).

I am almost certain that NELPG were responsible for the (cosmetic) transformation to Silver Link, with a single chimney. A pity is was not kept so for at least a while, when it was put back to working order.

Bittern did masquerade as Silver Link for some years at the Stephenson Museum and gave its name to the new road that was built to serve the retail park that was developed there. The repaint had been sponsored by ICI, but it was a two-tone grey, and the general opinion of most people was that it was the wrong colour. One of the volunteers there had worked at Gateshead shed before the war, and always maintained that the real colour was more like the silver aluminium paint than grey. It was quite attractive in the ficticious livery and looked very good when it was occasionally drawn out into the sunlight, I would have very much liked to see it run that livery.
