Last Friday I went to the Mid Hants Autumn Gala.Great day,great weather and 7 locos in steam.The loco I really wanted to see was the super D 49395 which was immaculately turned out.In my spotting days in the 1950s the few SDs I saw were on my forays to Crewe,Leeds and Manchester areas but as young LNER lad I was far more interested in copping the LMS jubilees,patriots,scots and coronations.However one sunny afternoon(werent they always!) in the late 50s the gang were all at the north end of Selby station when to everyones amazement 48915 with an 8F(Springs Branch Wigan) shed plate came through light engine from the north and headed out in the Leeds direction.It could only have come from Hull or York(highly unlikely from the Bridlington direction)
If it came from Hull I assume it most probably worked a freight from West Yorkshire down the old L&Y to Goole and then on to Hull and was then working home to the LMS.However I suspect it most likely came from York where it had worked a filling in turn from the Leeds area via Church Fenton.I'm surprised they sent it back from York on the busy double track ECML instead of the 4 track line out of York to Sheffield/Leeds .
Did super dees work into York or was what I witnessed a unique one off event? I supose this is akin to an LNER Q6 working down the WCML--or did this happen on occasion?
Any thoughts from the older generation out there would be most appreciated
