So many ifs and buts, and the numbers (cost etc) are mind-boggling. The NIMBY lobby will have a field day.

Completely agree Flamingo, but if the numbers are mind boggling now they certainly wont' be any less in 5-10-20 years! Look at what was allowed to happen over Crossrail. Again the planning will present problems, but surely France,Spain,Germany, Japan and increasingly China can't all be wrong.
Will it happen? The future spending outlook looks fraught to say the least. One hope may be the opposition to further expansion at Heathrow by certain political parties, with railways proposed as a means of reducing the number of internal flights. Mind you politicians have been known to 'flip' occasionally( LOL )! A politican in office is a different animal to one in opposition, as we all know only too well in regard to the railways.

Lord Adonis has been interviewed on the fools lantern and he has praised Notwork Fail as being the experts in these matters of projected new railways. Is he unaware of the bloody mess these clowns made of West Coast Route Mod? Having just finished (or not quite maybe) this project why are we having another new route through the same part of the country?

It will be interesting to see how all these grand plans fare after the next election and a change of government. If the Tories are to be believed, it seems that they are less impressed by Network Rail than the present government so maybe big changes afoot, even if this scheme and Crossrail actually happen, which I cannot see in my lifetime, to be honest. The road lobby are very, very strong and most people in this country still never go near a train in their daily lives. Put against money needed for schools, hospitals etc. railway investment always loses out, especially when the economy is not performing that well. Sorry to seem negative, but I've heard it all before.
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!
