Today's issue of Railway Herald (http://www.railwayherald.com) has a photo of the new class 70 loco being built for Freightliner. I know that it is only in primer and may look better when it is fully painted, but I think that, as it stands, it may possibly be the ugliest loco ever to grace the railway in this country. I am not sure whether I am looking forward to seeing one or not!

As much as I like modern traction, I thought that this site was meant for historical articles and not the latest forms of American built imports. Sorry if that upsets anyone.

It does look ugly. I guess the first Class 68s will be delivered soon. Did they choose to skip Class 69?

Further down in that Railway Herald is an unusual but welcome sight: a loco in NBR livery. The lone surviving Y9 to be precise.

Doesn't upset me. In fact I totally agree. There are other forums for the discussion of infernal combustion, ugly pieces of junk that are being added to the already badly designed things that pass for rolling stock these days. Nostalgia maybe, but at least the railways of the past had some style to them.

Not what I'd call a looker but perhaps its appearance will mellow in time.

Time does make a difference - look how opinions have changed about the Bulleid Q1s! (Personally, I'm in the "so ugly it is attractive" camp for the Q1)

Modern scene might not be the reason or main subject for the forums as a whole, it is definitely on topic for this particular forum (Non-LNER Railway Chat).

Yes, Richard, while it is a valid subject for Non-LNER Railway Chat and is within the 'letter of the law' under this heading, my own leanings would prefer much the 'spirit of the law' be enacted and the post-1968 era be ignored, especially when it comes to the moving eyesores of today. We are, in the vast majority, a steam-driven community on here.

This beast should be proposed to the Guinness Book of World Records as being the ugliest diesel locomotive ever built. There have been some ugly diesel locomotives built in the past, such as the Co-Bo, but this one beats them all by a wide margin.

So any mention of Shildon/Newport, the Tyneside electrics or Woodhead is out, then?

Jesus wept,it's like something out of the old communist bloc.Absolutely revolting.Talk about being smacked with the ugly stick!It looks like something in the process of being scrapped.How can we get rid of the class 60's and buy crap like this?The 47's have been given numerous leases of life-couldn't something similar be done for the 60's?

Woodhead electrics are acceptable as the original was an LNER machine. Also I would say that the Shildon/Quayside electrics are also acceptable because of the 'pre-1968' era, and also because of the fantastic photos of them working alongside steam.
