Hi All,

Is anyone aware of any books similar to "Steam Days at Haymarket" that feature any other LNER depots ?
Thoroughly enjoyed reading "Steam was my calling" by E.S. Beavor that features a variety of LNER depots and just wondered if there was any other similar literature.

Try 'Buckjumpers, Gobblers and Clauds: A Lifetime on Great Eastern and London North Eastern Region Footplates' by Jim Hill. Available on Amazon and a good read

Dublo 6231: Another good read is 'Top Shed' by Peter Townend on 34A King's Cross, possibly available second hand. Also there is 'Motive Power Chief', by A J Somers, based on New England and King's Cross and '48 Years on the Footplate 1942 -1990' by Roland Ruffell. Mind you, 'Steam Days at Haymarket' is a good read, combining good story telling with plenty of information. I believe that Harry Knox is now working on a fuller history of Haymarket from its earliest days. If you can get hold of a copy you may also enjoy 'Track Record' by W H (Harry) Friend C1994, a collection based upon Gateshead and the North East, 'Men of the LNER', Peter Grafton, 'The Great Central from the Footplate' by Robert Robotham and Frank Stratford and 'Calling Carlisle Control', by Peter Brock.

You might also want to look for "LNER Sheds in Camera" by John Hooper, published by Oxford Publishing Co.

As the title suggests, this is primarily a collection of photos, but there are good captions of substance throughout. The jacket flap reads thus:

"Utilising over 300 photographs, this album portrays the engine sheds of the London & North Eastern Railway in their many guises. Included are views from before, during and after Grouping - many illustrating the servicing facilities; and with a wide range of photographs recording the profuse variety of locomotives stabled at the various sheds. Detailed views of the buildings and plant furnish modellers and enthusiasts alike with hitherto unseen information on the workings of the LNER Locomotive Running Department."

I've found this book to be an interesting companion on many a snowbound day.
