Who says it is an error?

The "Coronation Scot" was an LMS named express.
The picture depicts an LNER A4, so, the name should be "Coronation".

There was quite a flap about this music when it was first published. The cover on the sheet music was a classic of mistaken identity. Some poor sap lost his job for inadvertently selecting an illustration of Silver Link. Given the intense rivalry between the LNER and the LMS, this error almost amounted to heresy.

Also, I vaguely remember that Ellis lived somewhere in the west country and that his inspiration for the rhythm was supplied by running over GWR metals. In a sense, it almost qualifies the song as a precursor for the nationalisation of the raillways. Fascinating stuff.
This is what I posted in the railway Music thread earlier this year. Always fun to see that, though. Thanks, hq1.

"The Coronation" would have been a really stupid name for a piece of popular music, especially in 1937/8

If it was such a stupid name, how come one of the railways named their crack train 'The Coronation' ? lol

Or, put another way, there should have been a portrait of a 'Big Lizzie' on the cover. Fine machines....

Mr. Bedford,
Can you please explain why "The Coronation" is stupid and "Coronation Scot" is not?
Also, I was just making an observation connected to the picture. I thought people were intelligent enough to understand the point I was making. The question was "Can you spot the error?" I did, and made a comment and in return was surprised to see an asinine comment using bold letters. :x

Because in 1937 there was this little 'do' in Westminster Abbey with crowns, archbishops and shed loads of aristos. So any piece offered to the music buying public at that time called 'The Coronation' would conjure in the minds of such buyers thoughts of church choirs, fanfares and the rest of the flummery that follows the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas. On the other hand a piece called the 'The Coronation Scot' could only refer to the train of that name.

Who said it was an error? Does anyone in the real world really believe that a music publisher would give a tinkers cuss about what engine went to the front of his music sheets?

You are missing the whole point:
On the other hand a piece called the 'The Coronation Scot' could only refer to the train of that name.
If it refers to the train of that name, then it should have a picture of that train on the cover. not a picture of a rival company's principal express.
Who said it was an error? Does anyone in the real world really believe that a music publisher would give a tinkers cuss about what engine went to the front of his music sheets?
It matters not who gives a tinkers cuss about printed music, an error is an error (albeit an error that has little importance in the real world).
The original post had the question "Can you spot the error?" It was posted in the spirit of fun, and answered in the same spirit. It was not meant to degenerate into a "Is it really an error" or anti monarchy debate (incidentally the name was officially changed in 1917 to House of Windsor by George V because of the depth of feeling about WW1), and I feel we are taking it all too seriously (myself included).
I actually thought it was great that hq1hitchin posted it and wondered how he came across the piece of music.
It was fun and I would like to see more of these kinds of posts. :D

Okay, lads. Now for some music to soothe the savage breast. Here's the link (not Silver, I hasten to add).

This was put up a little while ago by our friend 'silver fox'.

Can't believe that an innocent posting could produce such an ill tempered response, what on earth has a 'shed loads of aristos' got to do with the price of fish?

A sad reflection on the state of society today, humour seems to have already deserted some people....

hq1hitchin,

I agree about the ill tempered response from Bill Bedford, but I would like to apologise for continuing the debate. Perhaps if I had let it slide no more would have been said, but I felt what was originally a good piece of humour, and not meant to be taken at all seriously, was being ridiculed and denigrated.

Once more, my apologies to all for adding fuel to the fire.
Keep the fun ( and actually quite informative stuff) going.

Malcolm.

The composer could well have lived in the West Country, and perhaps there is reference to the Coronation Scot in the music as well. The Music has four beats to the bar whe :D re as any self respecting A4 would do 6 to the bar!!!

It is strange where you here that off-beat timing. Our dog when he is drinking, sounds like his conjugated drinking gear needs a visit to the shop...
