Carlisle must have taken some beating as a place to grow up in the heyday of trainspotting (1950s to 1961/2, before diesels started to dominate).

I calculate that its three sheds had over 300 locos allocated to them in the mid-50s. Plus, I can't think of any other station where you could see LNER and LMS Pacifics together on a daily occurrence (Leeds City - A3s and Scots 'only').

I have no idea of the layout of Citadel station, but wonder if it was ever possible for an A3 and Duchess to be standing together on adjacent patforms waiting for the 'off' to their respective destinations. And did other LNER Pacifics ever visit?

I have seen a railtour photograph with Sir Nigel standing next to Sir William at Carlisle but i cant remember where it was from and the tour details.

Well it looks like some time after 1958, as Bayardo appears to have a Kylchap chimney.

Is that shot north or south facing?

That's the north end, Bayardo is possibly taking over a Waverley route express from Lady Patricia. Similar moves occurred at the south end with LMS taking over from LNER on West Coast trains and in later years LNER locos working south on the Settle Carlisle.

Picture of 46210 and 60079 likely to have been 1959/60 as by summer 1961 60079 was stored at Canal and 46210 at Kingmoor, both subsequently going for scrap. It is likely that Bayardo is waiting to relieve a train off the Settle & Carlisle, possibly the down Waverley, as the Waverley route stoppers often left from the north end bays. Seeing Pacifics of both LMS and LNER together at Carlisle was common . In the last years of steam it became even more common as Holbeck A3s began to work the Thames Clyde etc in 1960-61 over the S & C and the G&SW and LNER Pacifics began to be seen occasionally on the Caledonian routes to Glasgow and Perth, eg A4 60011 borrowed by Perth twice for the 12.20 Perth - Euston in August 1960.
Canal shed closed in 1963 and Kingmoor would pinch anything from anywhere if short of power. One could see LNER Pacifics from York, Doncaster or the various Leeds sheds on occasion. One day in 1964, I remember A3 60052 working a Liverpool - Glasgow forward as an example and the previous year Gateshead's 60083 was nabbed to take the 09.25 Crewe -Perth forward. The same happened more frequently as steam began to be used very much on a common user basis. Finally, of course Tyneside Pacifics would on occasion work in from Newcastle or Canal A3s could sometimes be seen on Newcastle trains on occasion, such as the 2.00pm ex Carlisle, in the 1950s.
Some of the Haymarket A1s of course had spells at Polmadie in the early 1950s, working down to Crewe on 66A diagrams on the Birmingham -Glasgow trains and Polmadie gained an allocation of A2s from September,1963. The shot of 46256 and 60007 mentioned in these posts was the Scottish Lowlander Railtour of 26/9/64, the last run of a Duchess in regular service and repeated with a night shot of 60009 and 46256 at the south end of the station later that day.

Someone asked about the layout at Carlisle Citadel.
I have attached a schematic of Citadel. Not sure how accurate it is though.

Pyewipe Junction: Photo of 60007/46256 forty four years ago tomorrow ,26/9/64. 'Scottish Lowlander' RCTS/SLS, one of the great railtours. Carlisle - Niddrie with 60007 what a performance from Driver Maclaren and Fireman Whiteman of Kingmoor, actually both passed firemen at the time. Schedule pulverised with 12/450 tons. 60009 Niddrie -Edinburgh suburban lines - Glasgow and then G &SW back to Carlisle. 46256 Crewe -Carlisle and return. A day to remember.

60083 SIR HUGO tackling Beattock Bank with a Down Anglo Scottish train. I'm afraid I've no details if the train was heading to Glasgow or Edinburgh or a date.

I've always been surprised that 'Shap' was never 4 tracked with all the traffic that used it, with all the money that the LNWR and LMS always said they had !!
