I refer to something which has puzzled me for years. How were mails picked up and dropped at speed by Travelling Post Offices during 'fog and falling snow'? The only answer I have got so far came from the late Alan Richardson, who told me that when he was a fireman at Grantham in the 1940s during bad fog, and there must have been plenty of nights when it was, it was the unofficial practice for the men on the TPOs to request the driver to give a pop on the whistle when they were nearing the place to put the nets out.
