Nurses
It may be a figment of my imagination from childhood, but I believe that it was common at one time for nurses in uniform to travel free of charge on trains. They would just be waved through the ticket barrier. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Nurses
I think that may have been true during WWII for a nurse in uniform. Immediately post war, my Mother then SRN and midwife, travelled to the continent on an armed forces style travel warrant as a volunteer for service in The Netherlands.
Interestingly, while I was going out with a nurse in the early seventies, many London bus conductors wouldn't take a fare when she was in uniform. I would offer 'two to Marble Arch' or whatever, but only be charged for my own fare.
