If anybody is in any doubt as to what is involved in extending a railway take a look at this site.

http://whr.bangor.ac.uk/changelog.htm

It details all the work currently being done on the Welsh Highland Railway.
Even though it is narrow gauge the sheer scale of the undertaking is amazing and as for the detail gone into in documenting the work. That is something else.

They've made a lot of progress this year. It seems like only a few weeks ago that I saw they'd passed Beddgelert - now the head of rail is 1km from Croesor Junction, and engineering work has started at Pont Croesor.

14 years ago, I walked from Blaenau Ffestiniog via Rhossydd Quarry and the tramway feeder to the Croesor Tramway and then all the way to Porthmadog. That was a 'day off' from my undergrad field work :-)

This site, http://www.isengard.co.uk/ also has a lot of information about the progress of the rebuilding of the WHR, the webmaster updates it nearly everyday, with new pictures, or the latest bit of news.
