As i've mentioned elsewhere. I believe that Tweedbank[?] the current "end of the line" has been built in such a way that basically you'd take the bufferstops off and start laying the extension. OK I know that's a rather simplistic way of putting it, but the powers that be have for once taken into account future possiblities.

i believe that at the carlisle end the MOD built a ammunition depot that has a rail connection.i believe that it is still in use which may make it difficult/impossible to run to carlisle.

And the M74 runs straight over the top of it on the level. Will not be cheap to tunnel underneath that. You can see an over bridge on the left heading north just after the Stobart Rail offices. I thought the MOD depot was now shut?

We are talking about a nationally funded rail project here. If they want it to happen and are prepared to spend taxpayer's money on it, it will happen.
It would be unfortunate for the Waverley project at Whitrope but there you go.

Like Pinza says, if there's a will to build all the way to Hawick or Carlisle, they'll do it, regardless what obstructions that have appeared since closure in 1969. It's not a heritage railway we're talking about! Back in 2013, they were busy building an expensive bridge for the Edinburgh City Bypass over the railway
