Pines Express (S & D )

Post by Copley Hill 56C »

I realise this is not an LNER subject, but I am trying to find out what the station stops for the Pines were between Bath Green Park and Bournemouth West,ie on the S&D itself. Can anyone help?
Many thanks Alan

Alan,

Not sure what era your are after?

The stops on the S&D itself were Evercreech Junction and Blandford, May 1934 Bradshaw.

The train also stopped at Poole, I believe.

I'm probably looking at the 1950's, but it could be that the two stops you've mentioned might well have been the same then, as in the thirties. If you know any more I'd be pleased to hear.
Thanks Alan

Ay up!

IIRC, it called at Evercreech Junction, Blandford and Poole in the BR period. It was one of the few trains that did not call at Templecombe.
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!

Can't immediately lay a hand upon my OPC reproduction of the 1955 S&D WTT, which should confirm the stops made. However, I have a Western Region WTT covering the S&D from Templecombe northwards and dating from 1960 (I think - it's incomplete). Interestingly, this gives a SX stop at Shepton Mallet for the down Pines, but not on Saturdays. There was no corresponding stop for the up train.

It used to be the practice for the 0740 SO ex New Street to put off its pilot at Shepton, but this was prompted by the operational consideration of reducing congestion at Evercreech Jc on summer Saturdays. Since the call at Shepton that I've mentioned was for the weekday Pines, operational reasons seem unlikely to have prompted this stop, as distinct from it serving some commercial purpose.
