I'll be perfectly honest,Richard,i thought Global Warming was just over-egged by band-wagon jumping politicians. You never know what to believe, but i would rather listen to a scientist than a politician anyday.

Oh politicians really do not want to deal with it! The politicians who have some understanding know they're between a rock and a hard place.
Rather than bandwagon jumping, I think a lot is "to be seen to be doing something" and to deflect some of the criticisms. On the other hand, a lot of the business "greening" is a bit of both often with a dollop of spin.

Models were predicting the Arctic ice cap to be gone by 2050 or so. There are now serious predictions of it gone in the summer months by about 2012. There definitely isn't consensus on this and it is probably still a minority view, but even those that think it won't happen will admit it is a serious prediction and a possibility.
Maybe that will give people the kick that is required...

We survived the Ice Age, we'll survive this. Our ancestors over millions of years survived far worse mass extinction events. I reckon we can too.

Yes we as humans will survive. We're an adaptable bunch and it takes quite a bit to kill us all off! But how about all our major cities? Remember, every single city ever built by humans has been built since the end of the last ice age.

The widespread changes in climate and agriculture will lead to the mass migration of hundreds of millions, possibly a billion people. This is why, even during the Bush years, the Pentagon identified it as a major threat to national security.

There are some very extreme views on these points - for example James Lovelock talks about a global population crash to under a billion (when he is feeling optimistic!) by 2100. I really don't think it will be that bad, but the computer models are predicting events much worse that I think most people realise.

I feel this thread needs to move, if we are going to continue it!
