Re: KX signalling in 1971
I may have gone into Kings Cross PSB as a train recorder coming from Finsbury Park No.6 as a telegraph lad in late 1974 or 1975 but didn't.
I vaguely recall a 'bell' would ring continuously inside Gasworks tunnel when the 'dolly' (disc signal) on the wall inside the tunnel was cleared from the Down Main no.1 line and maybe the Down Main no.2 line(?) back over to the Milk dock until the loco had passed the disc signal and it had returned to the ON position again. The atmospheric conditions inside Gasworks tunnel with a Deltics twin Napier turbines churning out a load of exhaust while waiting for the 'dolly to come off' across into the Milk dock was something else blowing through and passed the standing loco.

Re: KX signalling in 1971
After steam of the early 1960s and before the overhead wires of the late 1970s the way some of us like to remember Kings Cross...
Below- A rainy January day back in 1970 with a everyday blue livered Brush type 4 (class 47) heading over to Passenger loco for refuelling after working up 1A02 which arrived at 'the cross' around 10:00am on a weekday morning. The signal and roller blind route indicator are both off to the Down Main no.2 line into Gasworks tunnel were the Brush would stop and wait for the road back into the Milk dock before heading onto Passenger loco.

You should have done! Those at Finsbury Park No3 and Kings Cross got paid more than the humble others.
