Pacific 231 1949 Film

I came across this the other day while searching for references about Andre Chapelon. Its on UTube and called 'Pacific 231 1949 Film' featuring the music of Honneger - Pacific 231. Very evocative and very French!

There's a connection with the LNER too - see here:

When I studied the piece at school, I remember reading somewhere that the composer was supposedly inspired by a footplate ride on a Gresley Pacific on the ECML, but the date of the above photo (1927) suggests that this came later - the music was written in 1923!

Pacific 123 is a French award winning film in 1949. This movie was a tribute to the steam locomotive which included a close-up footage of driving wheels, running gear and railroad operations. And most of these footage's were taken at a speed.

The film is 'Pacific 231' and was by Jean Mitry. There are three version on U Tube but the first one is the most complete and shows the loco sheds etc before the main titles. It lasts about 9 minutes as did the piece by Honneger.
