Selby Sheds1925

My grandfather was killed in a smash on the Selby/Goole lne at Airmyn Bridge in 1925. I am beginning to build up a picture as to what happened. Has anybody any idea what the loco type might have been. The reports suggest that the accident was caused by the second loco being new, more powerful and a driver unnfamiliar with it. In short does anybody know what they had in Selby sheds in the early 1920s.

In the early 20's the following classes were allocated to Selby-

BTP,398,1463,D22,Q5,Q6,J21,J24,J26 and J27.

Cheers 50 C. I have to admit that I will now have to look up exactly what those loco types look like. This is all new to me. Like you I left Selby (forty years ago). As children (sixty years ago) we used to watch all the traffic on the Selby/Leeds as it ran past the end of our garden. My Great Grandfather was signalman at Brayton/Doncaster Road box and lived in what became Bell Berrys coal offices.

Mike,If you go to the .locomotives' section on the first page of this forum you can see photos of most of the loco classes I have mentioned previously.I will email the missing ones if I can find them among my books/mags.

Sorry for delay but I've only just seen this thread. During the 60s I knew a lot of retired Selby footplate men and spent many an hour listening to their experiences. I remember being told that in 1925 the bridge over the river at Airmyn (which was known as Newlands bridge to the crews) was the venue for a series of tests to evaluate the effects of hammer blow over bridges from different types (wheel arrangement and number of cylinders) of locos. One loco which he remembered was a Q7 which would be quite new at the time and could have been chosen because of its three cylinders. There were quite a number of locomotives present over the period of the test. He was sure there were engines from other companies involved. One strong memory was, he thought of a LNWR 0-8-0. The fatality did occur during the tests, perhaps due to drivers on unfamiliar locos. The tests were carried out under the title "The Bridge Stress Commitee" or something similar. I am sorry I can't be more specific but I am going to see if there is any reference to these tests anywhere.

Just checked the Railway Archive and they have nothing listed for an accident in 1925. Is Airmyn Bridge actually in Selby?
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Airmyn is just outside Goole on a closed branch line which ran from the Hambledon/Selby line to Goole. The bridge was probably over the River Aire. The railway actually ran through the hamlet of Newland a little to the west of Airmyn.
