Interesting Bryan, i was involved with the paddys who were excavating the first access shafts at Tottenham Court Road. They had four 40 year old cranes 2 working and 2 to canabalise for spares. They swore by them as they were ideal for the job. The cranes lifted less than 1 tonne so circumvented certain modern regulations and they were capable of lowering to 15m below ground level. They were light and manouverable. The paddys were hand digging the first shafts filling 500kg buckets at a time. As well as access shafts they dug quite a few new manholes for services to be re run.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
