Scrap Metal Thefts.

Post by 60041 »

Many railway preservation societies have suffered at the hands of scrap metal thieves recently, and it looks like it will be a continuing problem while the scrap prices remain so high.
Ae E Petition has been created urging the Government to take action and amend the Scrap Metal Act making cash transactions illegal, which is hoped will help reduce the problem.
It can be viewed and signed at:

I'm all for this.

All theives are scum, whether metal thieves or rioters er I mean looters.

It wouldn't be hard for the trade itself to clean up its act. Simply asking some questions would go a long way...

These E Govt petitions are a waste of time,, have a look through and see how many are anywhere near the 100k needed, the Hillsborough one may make it as it is over 75k at the moment but this one hasnt a snowball in hells chance. and even if the Hillsborough one does make it do you think for one minute this or any Govt is going to release damning papers into the public domain ? there is more chance of aliens landing on the roof of Buckingham Palace.
This petition idea is a cynical "sop" by an even more cynical Govt to make deluded folk think that they can change things, even if the petiton does make the reqd 100k it only means it will / may be debated on the floor if there is time !!!!!, it gives no guarantee that any legislation will be forthcoming. If you havent learnt by now that no Govt or M.P. listens to the electorates wishes you must be very naive indeed.
As far as metal thieves are concerned we here on Tyneside suffer continual disruption of the Metro service due to metal thieves stealing from the system.
Sorry to shoot this one down but this life as I see it.

I'd have thought the goverment would have taken care of all metal re-cycling from a few years ago instead of scurrying around collecting bits of card and paper.

A petition calling for Hillsborough disaster Cabinet papers to be released has reached 100,000 signatures - enough for a Commons debate to be considered.
Notice the "weasel" word considered.

In todays Newcastle Journal.
METRO passengers are facing disruption this morning after cables were stolen overnight.

It’s thought 18 metres of cable was stolen some time between last night and the early hours of this morning from a stretch of the Metro line in the Byker area of Newcastle.

A replacement bus service is currently in operation between the Byker station and North Shields.

A spokesman for Nexus, which manages the Metro service, said: “There is a replacement bus service stopping at all of the stations along the effected route.

"Staff are working to resolve the problem.”

It's ok for these guy's nicking this stuff but what they don't realize or care about is the pressure that is then put on signaller's especially when they nick cable and put all of an areas track circuits down which usually means 3.5 Absolute block working being introduced with trains being 'talked passed' signals which can sometimes go on for hours on end.

I had a situation like the above about 4 years ago which started around 10:am and finished around 5:pm, you mess up nowadays with '2 trains in a section' and your OUT THE DOOR no messing.

Whats 18 metres of scrap cable worth? maybe about £5 if they are lucky, yet it will have cost the Metro thousands in lost business, replacement busses and repairs - not to mention the thousands of passengers who will have been inconvienienced.
It is time these parasitic thieves were stopped once and for all, I do not think for one minute that his petition will solve the problem, but it might just spur the government into doing something.

The e-petition 'Full disclosure of all government documents relating to 1989 Hillsborough disaster' signed by you recently reached 131,233 signatures and a response has been made to it.

This e-petition has reached 100,000 signatures. The Government has notified the Backbench Business Committee in the House of Commons who will consider its suitability for debate when Parliament returns in September. This e-petition will remain live, and people will be able to continue adding their signatures. In the meantime, we would like to update you on the Government’s current position on the substance of this e-petition: The Government has confirmed its commitment to full transparency about the Hillsborough disaster through full public disclosure. All papers had previously been shared with the Hillsborough Independent Panel. The Government is happy for all the papers, including Cabinet papers, to be released as soon as the Panel so decides, in consultation with the families. We expect them to be shared with the Hillsborough families first and then to the wider public

Did the Tories cover up the truth about Hillsborough? As officials block the release of Cabinet papers on the football disaster, families of the victims raise a disturbing theory...

Exactly as I predicted - not wanting to turn this forum into a political platform but i hope you all realise how rotten the establishment in this country is - these same people send our young men to die in the name of democracy when this lot are no better than a Banana republic - they make me puke.

We are that.

If the Scrap Bill will be debated is going to depend on political willpower and wether or not our spin doctors can think of reasons.

Time for my medication now...

I do recall hearing about 5-6 years ago some place (maybe in East Anglia somewhere?) where all or nearly all of the signal wires to the semaphore signals were pinched during the night which is a bit unusual
