Although much was made of the fact that AWS and ATP were both not working on the HST that caused the crash, the primary reponsibility for the accident lay with the driver and his lack of attention.

Point made on comment section in theDaily Mail. One coach length out of tunnel, train doing 60mph, photographer has about 1 second to notice, aim camera and take picture. Something not quite right??

Lets not forget that this is in the Daily Mail, never a paper to let the truth get in the way of a good story, there may be a perfectly innocent explaination for this.
However I do remember some discussion last year on the scot- rail site when a driver was photographed driving a freight train whilst playing a video game. These things do happen and no amount of legislation or supervision will stop the odd rogue driver doing stupid things. I suppose it is a reflection on how safe trains are, and how effective AWS is that he feels that he can do this, unlike the driver of a fuel tanker I saw a few weeks ago driving down the A1 chatting on his phone whilst leafing through some paperwork on a clipboard.

Whilst this case appears to be "open and shut", I recall a similar picture appearing some while ago in a national tabloid...followed by the usual lengthy report/condemnation.
The first reader's comment merely confirmed the blatantly obvious...that the "fiend" was riding, off duty, in the rear power car!

Single-line working on the Dawlish Wall that day???

As others have said, it does all seem rather odd regarding the timing of it just coming out of the tunnel etc, especially when you look at the photo and realise the photographer must have been stood quite high up. Also the timing of the photo is surprising, up photographing at 6.37am?

I thought the headlights were in the outer "lens" of an HST and tail lights the inner. Or am I wrong about this? I never take much notice of these new-fangled dieseasels....
