What function does this set perform ?

Post by redtoon1892 »

While waiting for the Kings X train last Friday week a former H.S.T. set came, stood for 5 minutes and left back North the way it came. What function does this set perform exactly ?.

The famous "Flying Banana" or New Measurement Train. It is used to check clearances and track condition, and also has high resolution video cameras that record the forward view in real time.
At a Heaton open day a couple of years ago it was open for view and was stuffed with some very expensive electronic equipment. One of the technicians replayed a video of the section of line that passes my house and it was quite interesting to see our place as a drivers eye view; they even had a second or two of me cutting the grass!
I don't know how often it traverses other lines, but it seems to pass our place (ECML) every week or two.

The set has replaced the former Track Recording train LAB5.
It records Track Top and Line and checks for Misalignments, Twists, Wide / tight gauge amongst many other criteria. Any major faults used to be marked by paint splash Red or Yellow dependant on fault.
All presented on computer rather than Paper trace and sent out to local engineers to deal with as a matter of priority.
Results also used to monitor changing track conditions and target Tamping or renewals on problem areas.
During mid 2000s results were used as one of the criteria in the reduction of the renewals contractor companies from 6 to 4

Another unit based on a 150 Sprinter also does the rounds on lesser lines.

When I was with PW Maintenance at York in early 90s I often went out on both these types of trains to be the local ACEs rep and bring the traces back to the office ASAP as well as phoning in any major problems.

It also does OLE checks with a pantagraph (none powered) and rail checking (Ultrasonic I think) all at speed. Masses of data. It was used to check the new Airdrie-Bathgate line before Network Rail would take it from the contractors. there are official paths for it on the key routes, fully timetabled.
