Thanks for those.

I've done a bit of train travel in China. He should have mentioned the constantly-available hot water for tea replenishment, from coal-fired boilers fed by the carriage attendant. On one train the restaurant car staff were happy to sell their stock of bowls (complete with Chinese Rly logo).

Experiences while hunting for steam in the wild - none of this preserved stuff for me!

did you find any of the wild steamers? I thought even China and Poland had converted now.

I certainly did, cvr. But that was before the Beijing Olympics. Not so much left now, sadly, but at least I managed three trips while it was still there. I even managed to drive an SY light engine on one occasion. (Not many people or animals were hurt.)
