Hi all,
I was just reading about 'The Coronation Scot' and wondered (as I am sure I have read this somewhere), did the coaches that ran behind the maroon coronation class locomotive, have a similar treatment as 'The Coronation Scot' coaches? i.e Maroon with gold 'go faster stripes'. Or were they just 'bog standard' Period I, II or III coaches?

Behind red 6220(6229) Coronation: a set of 8 cars, in Midland Lake & 4 gold stripes, for the USA visit in 1939-46. They were made up of three articulated pairs, plus a Sleeping Car 377, and Club Car 823 (see photo). Loco "Coronation" 6220(6229) only test ran in the UK with this train briefly, (with headlight but no bell on), after the Press photo session of the bell being attached at Euston, when she went via Wembley/Berkhamstead/Tring/South Kenton for further publicity photos at speed (no bell). These red striped coaches were never used on the Euston to Glasgow service, (although probably intended for the 1940 service, which never happened due to the war anyway). The 8 cars remained in the USA during the war and were used as Quartermasters' Officers Mess, at Jeffersonville, Indiana, until returning 1946, and repainted plain red, split up into just articulated pairs.
I have photos of other red streamliner locos hauling plain red coaches on non-Coronation Scot routes; and blue streamliner locos hauling plain red coaches; and Mid-Day Scot trains having a GWR composite brake coach stuck behind the tender from Crewe, (see Ted Talbot's Coronation Scot book pages 27 & 58 plate 73). And also 6229 in shop grey/white stripes, with a GWR coach behind her! (see Ted Talbot's Coronation Scot book page 60 plate 78). All I'll say is never believe those Hornby red striped coaches - never happened like that!!
As for the three sets of 9 blue/silver striped Coronation Scot coaches, (The first set had light coloured roofs. The subsequent two sets had dark roofs) they were stored during the war, only to reappear in 1947 repainted in plain red, though never to go back as three sets of 9 coaches running the Coronation Scot ever again.
Out of all of the Coronation Scot coaches ever used, red striped or blue striped, only 1 Kitchen Car 30088 from the third blue set exists today. And that is now a holiday coach (painted red!) and has little resemblance to its catering days on the streamliner service, especially regards to the originality/size/amount/positioning of windows and doors. http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org ... sp?Ref=736
