George Behrend RIP
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!
Re: George Behrend RIP
Shame this obituary notice doesn't give his full name. For the record it was George Henry Sandham Behrend.

Re: George Behrend RIP
Ossie Nock's earlier books were certainly OK, but towards the end of his career he went a bit haywire. For example, it turned out that "his" World Atlas of Railways (published in 1978 when he was 73) hadn't been written by him at all - he'd done a "rent a name" deal with the publisher to help them sell it! They got it ghost written for him and, judging by the number of mistakes in it, I don't think he ever saw the manuscript prior to publication.Micky wrote:Not wanting to detract from the late Mr.Behrend as a writer on railway matters my personal favourite writer on all subjects relating to railways including locomotives and signalling (who knew more about railways in his little finger than the whole of the current management board of NETWORK RAIL, VIRGIN TRAINS, STAGECOACH and the rest of them put together!) was none other than the late Mr.O.S.Nock. I guess most people on this forum would have a book or two of his in there book collection.
There was a big hoo-ha in The Railway Magazine about this at the time. Things like that don't do author's reputations any good at all
