As some of you may know, we lost our Border Collie of 16 half years the week before Christmas. She had indeed been a loyal friend and is greatly missed. This photo was only taken last July.


We had made enquiries about Border Collie puppies a couple of days before Christmas. Then there was an out of blue phone call on the morning of the 27th.

Meet the new Girl on the block. Lass, 8 week old Border Collie. As you notice on the photos, she is what is called a Blue Merle (I believe Merle is a dominant gene which alters hair colour, and lightens eye colour, hence her striking blue eyes.


She is a bundle of fun and settling in well.

She is currently on her bed sleeping on her little bed in the kitchen, but 45 minutes ago she was playing with her new rubber ring which she loves! She also lights my fingers too!!!

Little Star already, and give her a few months and she will be walking throughout the Dales!

shes a little cracker and I think she would benefit from living in Lincolnshire,but I can see theres already no chance of that.I think she is a right little cracker.

Sorry to hear about the old girl but you did right by getting another one right away, she's beautiful.

I'm on my second Border Collie and she is very sincere. She was a rescue dog aged about 6-12 months and I've had her for 4 years now. Wouldn't be without her. Never been any trouble, never chewed anything. But she gets her own back by barking when she sees anything canine on the tv, especially when they're her own kind, especially on One Man and his Dog.

They're a very intelligent breed and I'd say bitches more so than dogs.

My previous one had blue eyes when he was a puppy but they turned brown as he grew older.

Today she discovered how to bark, while getting frustrated at one of her toys! Very sweet, like a small terrier bark!

She is a clear advocate for recycling as she likes to eat....what comes out of her

She fell asleep on the carpet this evening while we were watching a film....very sweet!

Hi Tom, sorry to hear about your old Meg, I know the how you feel, I have been there before, but I also know the joy a young pup brings, and your little Lass looks like a cracker. There is only one thing better than a Border Collie and thats two Border Collies

How old are they? We are thinking when Lass is 1, getting another pup so that she isn't lonely, and they both have each other to play with.

Do your two get on well?

not meaning to butt in ,but when I had two they were fantastic friends,although both Malrs never had a Border Collie Bitch so obviously no experience. A very Happy New Year to the three of you.

I love border collies having watched "One Man and His Dog" with Phil Drabble when I was a boy. Your pets are gorgeous animals!

When my youngest son finally persuaded my wife and I to get our first pet last year, we would have loved a border collie, but we just knew it would not have been fair on the dog because our lifestyles would not have allowed such intelligent and energetic working dogs sufficient stimulation and exercise.

So, we followed the "idiot's guide" on the Kennel Club web-site which helps you chose the right breed, asking questions about age of children, size of garden, time available for walks etc.

There were loads of terriers and poodles but the breed which caught our eye was the "Kooikerhondje" - Dutch for "decoy dog". These dogs appeared in many of the old Dutch Master paintings. We thought that the coat was very similar to a brown and white collie and the face very handsome.

Jack joined us in September last year and is now around 18 months old:
Jack's arrival has had a huge impact on the family and mostly for the better! Not quite so good was my wife not tripping over him after we had only had him for a couple of days, and completely rupturing her Achilles tendon, (which did not get diagnosed for almost 4 months!), leading to a major op in January this year! On the plus side, Jack has forced us out walking and we're all fitter for it. My testosterone-filled teenage boys also seem to mellow in his company!

Tom, you got a little cracker there and a bright little 'un if I'm not mistaken. Training HER will be a battle of wills I reckon.

Good on yer for getting another. I recently moved into a house with 2 cats and now realise how much I've missed my ol' Sooty (she was a black cat ) who passed away when I was 16.

I'm now 46 and loving ecery moment with 'em. Another moggy for me when the worst happens to Rosie and Jim.

That is one very Handsome looking dog. I could willingly rehome him,but I suspect four very unfriendly objectors would descend upon me displaying their wrath. .Seriously young Jack is gorgeous and I bet even the Good Lady was able to forgive him at the end of the day.

Gorgeous - would absolutely love a collie myself but rented accomodation means no for the foreseeable future. Regarding the recycling her own waste, a friend of mine's dog often does that - his theory is that it's the dog seeing it as good housekeeping
