Very interesting, someones spent a lot of hours building that thing

It reminds me of something simular but a lot more basic that i remember seeing about 15 years ago of a smaller model of a major airport which was just a flight terminal and a couple of buildings including a aircraft hanger and a control tower with several long runways that were angled at 45 degrees further a long the runway to simulate aircraft taking off & landing. The aircraft were attached to the runway and taxi area by a wire that ran in a groove a long the runway and taxi area simular to like that of SCALEXTRIC racing cars. This model was a lot more basic then the one pictured above but i would guess that you could still have many hours of pleasure operating it, the fella who built this model and operated it was pictured dressed as an Airlines pilot when he opertated it

That is really impressive - i've often thought it would be neat if there was a way of having motorised cars (and aircraft!) going around a oo gauge model railway

I dont know if you all remember my thread on the ortogo railway in the modelling section one of the items was a working canal filled with real water and operating barge worked by a cut down triang dock shunter with a magnet on top of it, that drew the barge along by virtue of running along a track underneath and pulling on a corresponding magnet on the Barge keel. Thats one idea. This would work ok for road vehicles as well and there was a system for flying models electrically round a pylon that i suppose could be used but a curved runway is a bit non prototypical.

I was there last Boxing Day - the airport was only partly built and the planes were not working. I was impressed by the number of model cars in the round car park at the top. Considering the price of air fares nowadays, it's probably worth a day trip - at holiday time and weekends you will probably have to book in advance, but they cater for this on the website.

The whole layout is built on two levels in an old warehouse in Hamburg harbour. The airport is only a small part. It starts off pretty crudely, but as you move from one room to the next the standard gets better and better. Several countries are covered - the Swiss part has a gigantic mountain. There are also USA and Scandinavian sections. I believe they intend to do the UK sometime, but since everything is HO, that might be a problem.

This is Berlin in miniature, including an airport where the aeroplanes take off, land and taxi around. I was there on Boxing Day 2009 when they were just starting the new government section shown on the home page of the site. Again worth a visit - the wife will find plenty to do down the Kurfuerstendamm.

Thinking about this I reckon the system must be based on the Faller car system you know, a bit like a Lightning is based on the ideas of the Wright Brothers!

As impressive as this layout is (and it is impressive) i must admit i prefer the 'less is best' when it comes to layouts, i personally like the mimimal school of modelling were you fill in the gaps with a little bit of imagination and not to much background glutter

Infact i prefer no scenery and minimal buildings & structures on a layout infact just a baseboard with the track and locos & vehicles
