hi, I'm new here. Name's Fraser. I'm interested in the LNER because of the famous engines, but also because of the general character of the architecture and scenery on the route. I like their liveries too

while I'm here, can anyone tell me what the engine class below my username signifies? And why am I a Y7?

The forum software allows rankings - basically just labels. As you post more, the label will change.

We eventually decided on a series of rankings using locomotive classes ordered according to size/prestige. So we have the A4 Pacifics (like Mallard) at the top - prestiguous although not the largest or most powerful of LNER engines.

The lowest rank is the "Y7" - these were tiny 0-4-0T side-tank shunters inherited from the NER. Two survive:

Althought tiny and low power, they have a certain following. They "look right", for a start!

this kind of notation is (can be) a bit of fun
and I was recently reading the suggestions thread related.

This sort of thing has come up from time to time on various tropical fish fora that I visit,,
the big prob with it is that those who post the most may not be the best authority !
(quite important when the well-being of living creatures is involved, less so here perhaps )

So, my mini-beef is that it should not be a "rank"

but I'm new here so I shouldnt really spout forth !

'rank' - blame the authors of the original software. That's what they called it!

I keep meaning to add "administrator" to my avatar (icon). Then I can have a proper ranking as well...

i understand your point. But that is possibly why the loco class system is the least of all evils as apposed to recognised ranks such engineer, to porter. Or is it the other way round.

And incidently the LNER is much more important than fishing, also how have you survived in the south west for anytime with out being hunted down and converted to GWRology? All the best to those of you on the front line....

Hehee, twas the SWMBO who kidnapped me and brung me south, she was a GWR(/BR) spotter who spent her time just east of the Severn tunnel

oh and how those floodgates do open, we all have our favourite.... Grand Wandering Railway. Or we could go on for days about how they never made a real express locomotive, stuck on 4-6-0's whilst all about them had found the pacific.
