Modesty possibly prevents our esteemed site owner (Richard Marsden of course) from mentioning the fact that he has just passed the necessary tests to acquire his Private Pilot's License - many congratulations to Richard.
I don't see how that might help him in his regular trips across the Pond though - he's gonna need a bigger plane.

There are options a number of my former North American colleagues employed, of either living in an Airpark community, or having their own runway or shared runway access on private land. Some of these guys commuted daily to the various runway equipped offices; and if there was to be longhaul travel, could fly themselves to a gateway airport typically far more rapidly than by using a commercial flight. I twice had the fun of flying as passenger from runway equipped offices, the best was from just North of St Louis to 'Will Rogers World Airport' Oklahoma. Yee haa!

I'm minded to shout Duck!
But that might be a bit controversial
Well done Richard.
And remember a landing is a crash under control.

For some reason, I've only just noticed this post (only a few months late!).
Thanks for the congratulations everyone.
Planes aren't cheap - I think it will probably have to be a share, if I do. Probably a little while yet, so renting Piper Cherokee/Warriors. Might go for instrument rating next summer - we'll see. In the meantime to keep proficiency I'm trying to land at as many airports within 100nm as possible. As it happens Will Rogers is *just* outside (their VOR is right on the line I've drawn). It is the only airport I've seen with nodding donkeys within the perimeter!
There are some I've crossed off the list: DFW International, Fort Sill (army base with a Restricted Area artillery range), etc.
