Re: Freak weather!
That article is so riddled with inaccuracies and vague phrases, it is pretty worthless really.
For one thing, the jet stream hasn't "moved south" this summer. In effect, it moves south every winter and north every summer, and this year has not gone quite as far north as it normally does, but only by 250 miles or so, which is neither here nor there on a planet which is 25000 miles in circumference.
Instead of being above Western Scotland, it is over central England and we are getting the weather that is always associated with it.
It is a bit of a vicious circle, because on normal showery days we would maybe get a few isolated thunderstorms but the air would be too dry for many to develop.
This last 6 weeks, because everything is so saturated, there is plenty of moisture to rise up from the ground and condense into vast clouds, and so it will continue until we get a week or so of sunny weather to dry things out.
People always like to think there is something sinister about the wide variations in the weather, but it is really just down to the meeting of cold air from the Arctic with warm air from the tropics.
The two are never too far apart at this latitude, but stay on one side for too long and it will be either floods or drought.

Re: Freak weather!
Only just caught this posting- Earl Marischal, you're not on your own in this bit of an atmospheric freakout. I also live in Burbage and was working from home that day. All morning it was building up and for an hour sounded like someone intermittently running up and down the side of the house with a wheelybin. We have two cars marked on every panel - 36 dents on one half of a bonnet. But no major house damage fortunately.
this is 2" across the face viewed but at least 3" on the long side - strangely beautiful in its abstract shapes but bloody terrifying when its all around descending with such force as to bounce and clear the fence!

Not the most inspiring composition and the garden is not currently worth a daytrip out or really much competition for Chatsworth but if you excuse those faults the atmospheric conditions are memorable.

Re: Freak weather!
Good heavens, I cant remember seeing anything quite like that since the late 60s.
Then I experienced a storm of large hail which was so heavy that after a sweltering first half to the afternoon, the hail turned everything completely white and then remained on the ground for over an hour. Even then I dont think the hailstones were as large as some of those.
That is an excellent video. Have you seen the others on Youtube?

Then, when you are tired of those, try watching this one from Oklahoma in order to see the extremes that hail storms can go to:-

Re: Freak weather!
Mostly, I tend to end up living in boring places where everything happens just before of just after my time there. For once i landed dead on time and while its definitely a distinctly memorable occurence I'm glad its unusual and not the norm. One to treasure for its difference and not to wish for all over agian or on anyone else for that matter. What it does to the vegetation is quite impressive too - like an airborne brush cutter.

Another Forum member in Burbage! I'll send you a PM twa_dogs!
Well, our 2 car insurance claims are registered, but due to backlog only one has thus far been inspected by an assessor. The other one is being examined on 24 July. We doubt that the cars will be written off but there are some horror stories out there.
The broken Velux window is one of those shall I/shan't I claims. £300+ quote but £100 excess. Hmmm......
This is all going to drag on for some time.

G'Day Gents
With all this wonderful weather going on in England, is'n't it about time for another Gasworks Tunnel flood ????????????
The last one I can remember, was on a Saturday (mid 70's) and I was on a Rest Day so I missed it

Weymouth had rain coming in near-horizontally all day. I should know, I was in it!
Thank God for high-quality Le Chameau wellies
Sunday was beautiful, though. A good friend and I performed as animalistic mime artists for the local gallery there.

There's this big bright thing in the sky here in Wolves-by-the-floods.
Is that the sun?

.... aaaah, I'm sorry to dissapoint, but in depth analysis reveals that the object you are describing in the skies above you is not in fact the sun but is actually a distress flare from an unfortunate cargo ship left high and dry in the midlands after the flood waters have receded slightly with only half a days rain today
