Ay up!

A Pentathlon: shunting, timed acceleration and deceleration, cleaning, starting and stopping a loose-coupled freight and sustained high speed running?

For the Javelin couldn't we replace that with a shunter's pole?

And as for the discus? A wagon wheel  ! Sort the men out from the boys....

Wagon Wheels are not allowed inside the Olympic park, because they are produced by Burtons who are not one of the official sponsors.

kudu wrote:Micky, I think you will find that "2012 Olympics" has been registered as a trademark or something by the sponsoring companies so you're not allowed to write it. Whenever people bring the Olympics up in conversation (not that often, I admit) I ask them how they spell it, and if it's 2012 in numbers, not words, I warn them I'll have to report them and that they should expect to hear from McDonald's or whoever.

There's a brilliant TV comedy series running at the moment which had to be named "Twentytwelve" and not "2012" for this reason.

read it again he used 'the'

also you could use 2,012

As it's a first offence, perhaps I could be persuaded to overlook the matter on this occasion. With your influence in high places, maybe you could arrange for me to have access to a rail equivalent of those reserved lanes to Stratford. Do the present operators really need 6 tracks out of Liverpool Street?

With reference to this, er, (looks both ways) thingy going on, I see security is being handled by 'capital letter, single digit, capital letter', that's okay, isn't it? Good.

Well, this is the company at the centre of a bank robbery here in which one of its own security crew shot and killed some of his own colleagues while making a nightshift pickup call. Many questions have been raised as to the screening and subsequent training of potential employees of this company.

@Mr B: You can't copyright or trademark a number: Intel tried that back in the early 1990s with "386" but various courts said "no" - hence the 80586 which was then under development was renamed "Pentium" which was trademarked.

"2012 Olympics" might be a trademark, but trademarking "2012" or any other number on its own is not going to stand up in court for what I hope are obvious reasons.

Listing a TV program as "Twenty-Twelve" probably has more to do with aesthetics, and/or the practicalities of TV listings.

I'm only going on what the writer (or was it producer?) said on R4 recently (Front Row, probably). It didn't sound as though he had tongue in cheek. But he could have been mistaken, of course.

Ay up!

Actually, Richard, it has been done. Peugeot and Porsche had a legal clash over a model number which Porsche won. Was it over 911?

Brain's gone, I know....

Of course "911" also has other meanings (a common alternative to "999" for emergency phones) in North America such a claim would probably be thrown out of court.

Ay up!

Got it the wrong way round. Porsche wanted to call the 911 the 901 which Peugeot objected to.

Tell you - brain's gone!

As for registering trademarks - you can trademark a brand name and also names for individual product lines. For example, for years VW had the sole rights to the GTI brandname. And guarded them jealously.
