Re: Sir Jimmy Saville RIP
The ECML was electrified from KX to Hitchin/Royston in 1976 under a labour government. Hitchin - Peterbrough didn't really get underway till 1987 but it was done very cheaply and included retrograde steps such as reducing Huntingdon - Peterbrough to 2 tracks. I know because I worked there.

RIP Sir Jimmy.
Arguably, the most misspelt surname in history...
Cheers

Re: Sir Jimmy Saville RIP
I think what happened was that there was a change of mind before the wires went up at all along there, but it's interesting that there seem to be more cantilever structures along parts of that stretch, and not so many headspans as elsewhere, suggesting that some areas of the original Overheads design were perhaps added to rather than completely revised.Micky wrote: " .... Sorry to go off topic but just commenting on the above post, something that i had completely forgotten about until i read something recently on the electrification of the route between KINGS CROSS to ROYSTON (on the Cambridge branch) was that originally ONLY the SLOW LINES north of WOOLMER GREEN to HITCHIN were going to be electrified believe it or not.
To be honest i can't remember 35 years on if they did only electrify the slow lines north of WOOLMER GREEN first or if they electrified the mains lines as well to HITCHIN at the sametime? "
Another similar idea that never happened was to only 'wire' one road between Hertford N. and Langley and signal it for 2-way working.

Buried in Scarborough this weekend at an angle of 45 degrees so he can see out to see.

In the last ten years we've lost Johnny Cash, Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and now Jimmy. So where are we?
No cash, no jobs, no hope, and no bugger to fix it.

Re: Sir Jimmy Saville RIP
Yeah i guessed it
Jimmy's gonna have a ton or two of CONCRETE poured on top of his grave to deter 'grave robbers' digging him up
Rumour has it that Jim has been buried with plenty of 'bling' on him
Oh well it's a sign of the times i guess
